The Oregon Lottery is turning back the clock—but with modern-day rewards. In celebration of its 40th anniversary, the Lottery has released a commemorative scratch-off ticket, reimagining its first-ever game, “Pot of Gold,” launched on April 25, 1985.
The new version, called “40th Anniversary”, is a $30 scratch ticket featuring the familiar rainbow design and glittering gold—but this time, players have a chance to win one of 25 top prizes of $40,000.
More Than Half the Tickets Sold — But Big Prizes Remain
Since its release in January 2025, the game has already seen brisk sales, with over 50% of tickets sold. Yet, most of the big wins are still up for grabs:
-
16 of 25 top prizes of $40,000 remain
-
4 of 5 second-tier prizes of $10,000 are unclaimed
-
6 of 8 third-tier prizes of $1,000 are still available
With odds of 1 in 2.87 to win any prize, the scratcher offers one of the most rewarding experiences for players in the state.
A Legacy of Giving: $16.5 Billion to Oregon Programs
Since its inception, the Oregon Lottery has evolved far beyond a game of chance. It has contributed over $16.5 billion to vital state programs, initially focusing on economic development.
Following a 1995 voter-approved constitutional amendment, the revenue began flowing into public education, and eventually expanded to fund:
-
State parks
-
Outdoor school programs
-
Veterans’ services
-
Local businesses and innovation initiatives
Lottery Director Mike Wells emphasized the organization’s long-term mission:
“As we look to the future, we remain committed to operating the Lottery as a stable and reliable source of funding for our state.”
The Power of Local Retailers: From Lounges to Supermarkets
One of the unsung heroes of the Oregon Lottery’s success story is its diverse network of retailers. While many players associate the Lottery with major chains like Fred Meyer, Safeway, and 7-Eleven, smaller local businesses have been integral since the very beginning.
One such example is Greek Village, a family-owned restaurant and lounge near Portland. Owner Irene Pavlatos credits Lottery ticket sales for helping her business thrive—and for enabling her to support her employees.
“It allows us to do a lot of good that we wouldn’t be able to do without it,” Pavlatos shared.
Thanks to commissions from lottery ticket sales, Pavlatos has paid competitive wages and even provided bonuses during difficult times for her staff.
A Community Celebration: 40 Years of Impact
Oregon Lottery’s 40th anniversary isn’t just a celebration of games—it’s a reflection of the state’s values. With contributions second only to income tax in terms of public funding, the Lottery has become deeply ingrained in Oregon’s growth and development.
Retail partners like Fred Meyer have acknowledged this impact.
“The Oregon Lottery has contributed significantly to education, parks, and vital state programs,” said Tiffany Sanders, Corporate Affairs Manager. “Here’s to 40 years of fun, excitement, and community growth.”
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Games and Good Causes
The Oregon Lottery’s revamped “Pot of Gold” game captures the spirit of where it all began—while setting the tone for what’s to come. With strong sales, substantial prizes still available, and a legacy of statewide impact, the Lottery is poised to continue making a difference in both entertainment and public service for years to come.
