eSports to Join Olympic Movement in 2027
The global sporting landscape is evolving, and in 2027, a major milestone will mark this transformation—the inaugural edition of the eSports Olympics, scheduled to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In anticipation of this groundbreaking event, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) has begun laying the groundwork for the nation’s participation, signaling a strategic pivot toward the digital future of competitive sports.
COB Puts eSports on the National Agenda
With just over 100 days under the current leadership, the COB has prioritized eSports as a crucial frontier. The committee has initiated study groups to understand the digital sports ecosystem and prepare the national framework for participation. According to Matheus Figueiredo, COB’s Institutional Relations Manager, embracing this movement is not just optional—it’s essential.
“This agenda is on the table,” said Figueiredo. “Understanding this moment and aligning with the future of sports is a responsibility we must fulfill.”
Uncertainty Surrounds Game Titles
Despite the enthusiasm, a key issue remains unresolved: which games will be featured in the Olympic event? The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has specified that titles must reflect Olympic values and often lean toward virtual simulations of physical sports. The IOC, in collaboration with the eSports World Cup Foundation (EWCF), is yet to finalize the list of competitive games.
COB’s Proactive Involvement in IOC Discussions
Brazil is not taking a passive stance. The COB is actively involved in IOC-led discussions to stay informed and influential in shaping the emerging eSports narrative.
“We are treating this matter with great care,” Figueiredo remarked. “It’s important for us to understand the path being paved by the IOC so we can prepare accordingly.”
A New Model for Athlete Development
Figueiredo emphasized that eSports demands a reimagined approach to athlete development. Unlike traditional sports, high-performance eSports training integrates mental agility, physical fitness, and nutritional balance.
“Top eSports athletes already train with rigorous methods,” he explained. “To succeed, we must ask the right questions: What are our goals? What do we need to reach them?”
National Federations Begin to Adapt
Across Brazil, innovation is rippling through the sports ecosystem. The Brazilian Table Tennis Confederation has already introduced a Virtual Brazilian Championship, setting an example of digital integration.
“We’re seeing the beginning of important synergies between traditional and digital sports,” said Figueiredo. “This collaborative spirit is essential for long-term success.”
Rio de Janeiro Leads the Way Locally
Rio de Janeiro is positioning itself as Brazil’s eSports capital. With an annual calendar of eSports events scheduled through 2026, the city is preparing athletes and fans alike for the 2027 Games. Arena Carioca 1 will host the Rainbow Six World Championship this month.
Chandy Teixeira, Rio’s chief executive for Games and eSports, highlighted the city’s pioneering efforts:
“We are the first public office dedicated to electronic sports in Latin America. Rio is a global event hub, and eSports fits perfectly into our city’s identity.”
Economic Promise of Competitive Gaming
The economic ripple effect of eSports is already evident. During the Free Fire World Championship, hotel occupancy in Barra da Tijuca soared to 90%. The city government estimates the total financial impact of the sector at around US$7 million.
The Clock is Ticking: Clarity Needed from IOC
While enthusiasm runs high, there is growing urgency around decision-making. Teixeira urged the IOC to announce the official Olympic game titles without further delay.
“We commend the IOC’s bold move, but we need concrete information now,” he insisted. “Electronic sports have matured. Games like Counter-Strike, League of Legends, Free Fire, and FIFA are global forces. It’s time to recognize them officially.”
Brazil’s Vision: Leading Through Integration
Looking ahead, the COB aims to position Brazil not just as a participant, but as a leader in eSports at the Olympic level. By fostering collaboration among federations, nurturing elite digital athletes, and pushing for international standards, Brazil is crafting a roadmap for excellence.
“We must guide this new movement with transparency and unity,” said Figueiredo. “It’s not only about winning medals—it’s about shaping the future of sport.”
